Infra red Saunas

Ceramic far infrared heater elements

An infrared sauna heater operates at a lower temperature than an electric stove found in conventional hot air sauna systems. The best infrared heater elements use ceramic emitters. Concave, ceramic heating elements have several advantages over rod-shaped elements (as found in the kitchen oven). A ceramic far infra-red system gives more bang for the buck as 96% of the energy output is emitted as infrared waves, whereas rod-style elements have at best an efficiency ratio of only 50%.

Another advantage of the SoftHeat ceramic infrared heaters is the mass of the ceramic element. The physical dimension of the ceramic elements makes them better for heat storage which results in a system that gives off consistent, steady, radiating heat. The lower surface temperatures of these far infrared sauna systems produce radiation at a higher wavelength which results in better skin penetration and increased sweat production.

Depending on the size of the room, you may need several ceramic heating elements to effectively warm everybody sitting on the benches. A typical 4-person home sauna system is best heated with six far infra-red elements. SoftHeat saunas have 6 elements in the Duet series (the 2-person model) and 7-9 elements in the larger models.

SoftHeat ceramic heaters are 100% pure solid ceramic. The system incorporates the finest quality full through solid ceramic heaters available, scientifically proven to provide true far infrared energy. They are tuned to emit far infrared waves at approximately the same micron wavelength the human body produces. We have documentation to show that they emit 90% of their heat in the far infrared range  (30-40% at 9-10 microns, 60-70% at 6-12 microns).

SoftHeat ceramic far infrared heaters provide constant emission. If heaters ever shut off during the sauna cycle, the benefits of infrared are negligible. SoftHeat saunas are controlled by a state of the art circuit board to provide constant, safe and efficient energy rather than oscillate between “on” and “off” in a thermostat controlled design.

Some manufacturers use simple metal rods that heat the chamber through convection, not radiation, or use large aluminium plates disguised to look like ceramic material. The convex heater design in all SoftHeat saunas produces a v-shaped energy wave to cover the chamber more evenly

Heater area is not relevant. What is relevant is threefold: the ability of a heater to deliver constant energy at the far-infrared wavelength, the number of heaters, and their physical placement to disperse the energy evenly throughout the sauna interior. In this regard, our heaters are curved (concave) to better disperse far-infrared energy throughout the interior of the sauna. The Soft Heat ceramic emitters are engineered to produce radiant heat that is within the frequency levels as our own body heat and thus is in tune with our own energy system. So it's safe and compatible for us to use inside SoftHeat saunas, allowing deep heat penetration not possible with other methods of heating.

The emitters used by SoftHeat Saunas are so gentle that hospitals use them to warm premature infants.

Natural Ceramic Element Synthetic Carbon Element

Ceramic starts from natural earth elements, and is the industry standard for use in Infrared Saunas. Concave Ceramic Heaters are able to spread Infrared heat very well.

Carbon heat panels, as advertising has shown, start as a piece of flexible fibreglass. (Note: Fibreglass is made of epoxy resins and glass.) A very thin layer of “carbon” is printed onto the fibreglass, and another fibreglass layer is added to encase the layer of "carbon" into the middle. Then the entire fibreglass panel is pressure laminated. These heaters are often branded as "Organic Carbon" heaters.

Element Materials in Heater:
"Carbon" as published in advertising for Carbon heaters:
Fibreglass Cloth: SiO2, PbO, Al203+Fe203/15%, CaO+MgO/21%, NaO+K20/1%, B203+BaO/10%
Carbon Black: C, SiO2, PbO, Fe203 + Al203, Cao, MgO, ZnO

Elements in Heater listed above: Silicon, Carbon, Lead, Iron, Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Sodium, Potassium, Boron and Barium.
